Cancun Beach Restoration Episode 2 Dec.9,’09 Dec 09

We drove over to the hotel zone again this morning, in search of the perfect spot to access the beach. We were looking to find a spot near where the work on the beach restoration project is currently. We first tried the public beach access behind the Kukulcan Plaza, but there were some public safety officials that prevented us from entering the beach. So we jumped back into the car and drove over to the Aqua Resort and struck pay-dirt. It was the very beach where the restoration work is currently. The Aqua itself is a beautiful facility where we enjoy going especially to the MB restaurant and other special social events.

The Aqua Hotel is located at km 12.5 on Av. Kukulcan right across from the LaIsla mall complex

At the Aqua……..the perfect way to enjoy a good read……….

Meanwhile just a few yards away on the beach………………

DSC02752

The workers were waiting for the ship to arrive from the Cozumel sand bar with another load of sand. They have exhausted the amounts they can take from the nearby Isla Mujeres sand bar.

This is the business end of the discharge pipe. It is fed from a pump ship offshore with a slurry of sand and water which is deposited onto the area to be restored

DSC02755

Some of the onshore piping that is attached to the offshore tubing. The tubing is suspended from floats on top of the water with one end connected to the ship and the other to the hard pipe on the beach. They can take it apart and add elbows to have the slurry directed onto various parts of the desired area. They build it up to a sand depth of approx. 6 to 8 feet. Then they spread it out and level it with a gradual slope back to the new shore-line.

DSC02757

Unfortunately mother nature’s wave action soon creates a “ledge” that is the beginning of the erosion process.

DSC02717

To prevent erosion the next step is to rebuld the artificial breakwater at the extreme north end of the project to protect those beaches that suffer the most extreme erosion. This is adjacent to the Dreams Cancun resort.

This diagram from the local newspaper illustrates how it will work. You can see the waves coming in right to left and how they dissipate.

Beach Resto006

Here are the stock piles of concrete blocks that will be dropped offshore to create the underwater artificial reef.

DSC02786

I think that they are doing it “right” this time around. An expensive lesson was learned after the “Wilma” restoration which only lasted about 7-9 months before all that sand was washed out to sea. This is an example of how the sea is damaging the resort buildings nearest the beach at the Aqua. You can see how the Caribbean has undermined the foundation of this building which is an entrance-way down to the beach.

DSC02769

These engineers are using a GPS device to precisely determine contracted specifications for the project in respect to the depth of the sand and how far out it reaches

DSC02754

The red flag means that it is not safe to swim. Each beachfront is closed for about a day or two as they move south. They provide temporary sand bridges over those big pipes until they can move them further down the beach. It’s all an engineering marvel and something many of us will never get to see again. The results hopefully will be long lasting this time around. There is some concern over the possible disruption of fishing and the reef Eco systems and we all hope they did their homework when planning this project and it’s impact on the environment.

DSC02780

Check back often…………….I’ll do my best to keep everyone informed on how the project is progressing.

Please leave me a comment as that is what makes doing this fun for me. Thank you for visiting and have a Happy Holiday season and a great vacation if you’re coming to this area for your vacation.

Sending you all warm Caribbean breezes…………………CancunTom 2009

Do you know if the beaches at the Cancun Palace have been repaired. I am going there next Wednesday.

Al, Here is what I base my statement on. They just moved the point at which the dredgers hook up to the pipe system offshore from the Aqua Hotel down to between the Royal Sands. They cannot relocate this system easily and it is not economically feasable to do so, Once they move it then then do not move it again until they use up all the piping to take the sand south of the current place where they hook up the dredger. Why should they move all that equipment, just to please a particular resort? The beaches are Federal property. The Sands do not own that beach, the people of Mexico do. Also from a engineering and project point of view they would only move the pick up point when necessary. If the Royal web site says differently I think that they are being optimistic. For the owners and vistiors of the Royal Sands I & II, I hope that I’m, wrong but that same piping system sat in front of the Aqua and it’s southern neighbors for 2 weeks.

  3. Al Rubin says:

Regarding the pipes remaining on the beach at the Royal Sands, this info is from the Resort itself:
The beach in front of Phase II at The Royal Sands will reopen this afternoon (December 21), but the Phase I beach will remain closed due to the continued presence of the pipes and heavy vehicles. Beach project engineers have yet to inform us exactly when the pipes will be removed but it will be a matter of DAYS, NOT WEEKS [emphasis mine].

    K,
The tri-royals are several kilometers down the road south of the current work. It will be several weeks until they get to them. I’ll keep you posted as they get near. We’ve stayed at the Royal Mayan and the Islander before moving to Cancun.

  14. KfromMichigan says:

Thanks for the update. Sure hope it works this time. Have you checked out the Royal Mayan and Carribbean? The beach there is so very bad. Love your blog and the beach pictures!

Dawn, I came here also the January after the late October visit by Wilma, then again after the first beach restoration was eroding quickly. I think that this time with the offshore submerged reef they will preserve the new beaches as well as provide a artificial reef for the marine life to enjoy. Let’s all keep our fingers and toes crossed. LOL :)

  18. CancunTom says:

    Tom,
Thanks for visiting and especially for your comment. I’m glad that you found it interesting.

  19. CancunTom says:

    Beth,
Thank you for leaving such a poignant comment. Your Dad experienced a wonderful last vacation, in beautiful place. I’m sorry for your loss, but also understand and know “he is at the beach everyday now”. Amen Tom

    Wow Tom,3
Thanks so much for the pics and story. That is a real engineering marvel indeed. I am on the cancuncare board (GONZO) and found your blog. Thanks for keeping us in the loop that arent living in paradise, just waiting till February……. when my wife and I will be back to Cancun and Isla.

I work for a land surveyor and that looks the same as the GPS I use. You can see me with it in a bit of a different setting here at our web site. And this is not a advertisment.

Tom..What an excellent report. Finally I do understand what is going on with the beaches. The visual and the written was most informative.
    thank you

  22. Dawn Fisher says:

I have been following you and Canuck since last spring… I was there the March after wilma and the beaches looked just like this… I have my doubts that it is going to work… Maybe just a repeat of what happened before…. The walls are great to find shells in thought. THanks for my paradise with me when I am home in the snow…

  23. Beth says:

I cant thank you enough. You are the only one w/pics of the project I can find. We visit the Sands every Sept. This yr was my Dads last yr since he passed away a week after they returned home. I know he is at the beach everyday now. Thanks again for sharing w/us.

  24. Linda says:

Great, great blog!! great photos too!!
We’re going to Barcelo Tucancun on the 24th so we follow the progression of this tremendous work very closely.
Hope to see a new beach there, it would be a great christmas gift!
Apart from Jimincancun posts on TripAdvisor (who mentionned your blog), it’s kind difficult to have up-to-date information, your blog give us A LOT!!
    Thanks!

I am fascinated by this Tom. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. It’s truly amazing. I hope there will not be a negative environmental impact. I’m assuming that done properly, this will reverse hurricane damage. It’s a lot of money, I hope it works. BTW thanks for the nudge on the RRS feed. I had subscribed to a couple and couldn’t remember how I did it. I now have everyone accounted for and my morning coffee will be wonderful.
