The beach project is nearly finished. Only a few more to do. The work has been temporarily halted due to an equipment breakdown, believed to be piping related. We drove over to the newly restored Delfines Beach this morning and walked as far south as we could until we got to the end of the work done so far. About 1 km remains to be finished.
Let me tell you that this beach is magnificent. There is plenty of room for everybody. Bring your swim suit and tanning lotion and prepare to have a great time. Cancun’s famous beaches are better than ever.

Looking North from Delfines Beach towards the Hilton

Looking straight out to the Caribbean at the Delfines Beach surf shack

Looking South from Delfines Beach towards the Crown Paradise Club

The sand has an abundance of small shells due to where it was mined

The dreaded “LEDGE”

This is the pipe that goes out to the underwater line that hooks up to the dredger ship offshore. This picture gives you an idea of it’s size.

Some of the hotels:
The Crown Paradise Club

The GR Solaris

Suites Brisas

This is what they do to tourists that don’t buy souvenirs from the beach vendors………LOL

This is as far as we were allowed to go. They had a pile of 30 pipe sections stacked up on the beach.

If you look carefully you can see the pile of sand where the work has stopped at the Royal Solaris

Today’s waves could have been fun to surf

We stopped to take a few pix of some wind surfers. Conditions were perfect for it and these guys were flying.

This view gives you an idea of how HUGE the beach is……………

I have to say that I’m working very hard at being a retired ex-pat………….it’s not easy going to these beaches, restaurants, ruins, islands, booze cruises, & party’s, but I’m doing my best. It’s tough work but someones got to do it so that all you boys and girls can see how fun retirement can be. I’m trying to set a good example of how to retire and not become a couch potato. You’re only young once………………….and I plan on being “18 till I die”.
Thank you for visiting and please…….. if you have a moment, leave me a comment.

I’ve seen locals fishing in the lagoon. One place is under the bridge across the street from the Pok-ta-Pok golf course club house. They also fish the south channel out to the sea near Club Med.
Tom-
Thanks so much for your detailed reports on this project – it certainly put my wife at ease while booking our return trip to the Royal Solaris.
Do you have any insight on where any surf fishing would be permitted? I’ve done the deep sea thing (and will again shhh…don’t tell my wife), but would like to get out and throw a few baits each sunrise. Is that something that is possible? How about on the lagoon side?
thanks again!
Hello hunnie, sweet blog! I really treasure this blog post.. I was curious about this for a while now. This cleared a lot up for me! Do you have a rss feed that I can add?
Hey Tom,
Thanks so much for all your pics and updates on the beaches ! I was just wondering if you know about how long each renovation takes? I am concerned because this year we have planned another family trip to Sandos Playa del Carmen in July and I just read that the renovation project has begun on that property Jan 22. I am so scared that if the beach is closed this will truly ruin the vacation for my 4 boys. Can you give me any advice? Should I l
look for another property?
Thanks in advance hope to hear from you
~~Natalie~~
Hi Tom, i am leaving for the Royal Solaris on february 15th, do you know if they will finish their work?
Thank you in advance.
Marlise, It is my understanding that they will not do anything on Isla Mujeres. The project only encompasses Cancun and Playa del Carmen/Playacar
Tom,
As a travel journalist, I am currently updating Fodor’s Guide to Mexico. Two weeks ago I was in Cancun and was able to see the extensive work that has been done on the beaches. Do you know if the government is (or will be) restoring the beaches in Isla Mujeres as well? Thanks for sharing the photos and details!
Dear Tom, You have very sexy feet.
Yep .. you have a tough job taking all these wonderful photos for us. Keep up the good work in your retirement! The color of that water ..WOW .. Thanks bunches!
Yes, the ledge will occur the entire length of the restored portions of the beach for some time. The beaches were restored out about 70 yards into the sea. The way it works is that they know about have that distance will be reclaimed by the ocean. The net result should be a final beach about 30-35 yards deep. At that point it should regain it’s natural gentle slope into the water. The ledge is caused by the wave action and the tides, so it will be with us for awhile. It is more pronounced in some areas than it is in others depending on wind direction, and speed which is what causes the waves. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for you comment. Tom
Always love coming to your site Tom. We’ll be there the last week of Feb. Does that “ledge” extend all the way through the hotel zone? We’re staying at the Ritz and are wondering if there is that 3 to 4 foot drop there as well?
Thank you for the pictures and all the information you share. My family is looking forward to our annual vacation in Cancun this April, and your updates makes this year more exciting.
Tom, your site is great! The photos of the beach are fantastic. Thanks for posting.
We enjoyed your blog and pics! Will be staying at the GR Solaris 2/8 – 2/13 and really appreciated seeing the new beach. Big improvement over the last few years. Keep up the good work!
Yhank you so much for the Pics and the information. I enjoy your site very much.
Thank you for all of your dedicated work!!!! It is very appreciated.
We’ve been reading your blog and looking at your pics of the beach restoration. We couldn’t resist to go see that by ourselves.
3 weeks ago, we went at Crown Paradise to see the beach works. Upon our arrival, they were at the Hilton and on the day we left, they closed our beach. I have not seen it since that time.
We wish we could’ve stayed 1 more week to see it all.
But thanks to your pics, we now know what we missed. Its beautiful!!
Must have a lot of people on the Crown’s beach because it was very busy before.
Thanks again!
Thank you CancunTom & CancunSuz – I love your site! I always wonder what it would be like to just pick up and move to Cancun.
Thanks for the great update Tom…I can tell you’re retired as your date on the most recent blog (on the beach map) says 2009!! LOL My son was at the Oasis a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed the new beach tremendously!! We will be at Royal Solaris in 25days….do you believe they will be finished up there by then??
Hello Tom,
I have been coming to Cancun since 1990 and have never seen the beaches better. I follow your blog, and Cancun Canuck all the time and I’ve got to tell ya, your pictures and writings help to keep this east coast freeze off of me. Over the years I have made friends with ex pat like yourself, and a bunch of the locals. Got some folks that live in Puerto Juarez, and in the downtown area. I stay in touch with most by using windows live messenger. Vicki, Cynthia [the jazz singer], Enrique who took my son on his boat when he was eight years old to catch his first barracuda, are just a few of my closest friends. Micah is now 16. Cynthia performs at Roots, Escargot w/ Heriberto Rey, and at sometimes in the hotel zone. Anyway, keep up the outstanding blog, and maybe on my next trip the wife and I can meet up with you and yours for dinner on the Avenue. By the way, will the beaches be extended at Club Med, and Dreams (Camino Real)??
Great blog, really enjoy following along. Thanks for taking the time to write.
